On Tuesday, 7 October 2025, I was doing one of my favourite things, visiting colleges to engage in strategic conversations with leaders and on this particular day, I had the genuine privilege of spending time at Hopwood Hall College with Principal and CEO Julia Heap. I have worked with the college and Julia for at least ten years, so it is always a pleasure to catch up and reflect on the fantastic work the college does. One of our topics of discussion during this visit was leadership development, building the leadership pipeline, and taking a more inclusive approach to the strategic planning process. All things I love talking about and regularly support colleges with. And over a cup of tea, Julia and I brainstormed an exciting concept to move the college’s leadership development forward.

Hopwood Hall College has long been recognised for its commitment to developing leadership and management capacity. In its latest initiative, The Leadership LaunchPad programme, the College partnered with FE Associates to co-create a truly unique, bespoke in-house development solution tailored to the college’s needs, designed to secure its long-term future through strategic leadership growth and development and succession planning. This case study explores the distinctive features, collaborative design, and innovative approach that set the LaunchPad apart, as well as FE Associates’ contribution in facilitating the design of a truly bespoke development programme.

A Unique and Bespoke Leadership Development Solution
The LaunchPad is not an off-the-shelf leadership programme; it is a highly tailored solution crafted specifically for Hopwood Hall College. The programme was developed to strengthen senior leadership capacity and to provide sector-leading development opportunities for both current and aspiring senior leaders within the College. By identifying a select cohort of individuals, the College ensured its leadership pipeline is robust, future-focused, and ready to meet emerging challenges head-on. The LaunchPad’s structure—combining psychometric profiling, immersive workshops, strategic planning projects, and external shadowing—demonstrated a comprehensive and innovative approach to leadership development.

The Power of Collaboration in Programme Design
A defining feature of the LaunchPad was the collaborative approach to its design and implementation. Hopwood Hall College worked closely with FE Associates, leveraging our extensive experience and sector insight to co-create a programme that was both responsive to the College’s strategic priorities and tailored to individual development needs. The involvement of external experts such as Graham Razey OBE and Paul Wakeling, both highly respected leaders in the sector, further enriched the programme’s content and delivery. This partnership ensured that the programme was not only rooted in best practice but also adaptable to the evolving landscape of further education leadership.

An Innovative and Forward-Thinking Approach
The LaunchPad exemplifies innovation in leadership development. Participants engaged in a blend of activities that extend beyond traditional training, including psychometric assessment, thematic development workshops, strategic planning stewardship, and leadership shadowing at other colleges. This multifaceted approach was designed to broaden horizons, sharpen strategic thinking, and strengthen technical leadership competencies. By immersing participants in real-world leadership scenarios and encouraging cross-institutional learning, the college invested in its leaders, equipping them to drive organisational success.

The Expertise of FE Associates
FE Associates’ role has been pivotal in the programme’s success. Renowned for designing and delivering highly bespoke leadership development initiatives, FE Associates brought deep sector knowledge, a track record of excellence, and a genuine passion for nurturing leadership talent. Our involvement ensured that the LaunchPad was not only aligned with Hopwood Hall College’s vision but also benchmarked against sector-leading practice. The result was a programme that was both innovative and practical, offering participants the tools, insights, and confidence to advance their leadership within the college.
A Participant’s Perspective

The impact of the LaunchPad is best captured in the words of one participant:
“I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation for the Launchpad Leadership Programme. It has been a truly inspiring experience, with a transformative impact on my development. The quality of the facilitators has been outstanding; their depth of knowledge, professionalism and the way they bring the content to life have made each session meaningful and engaging, pure class. Having the opportunity to visit another college as part of the programme was equally valuable, offering fresh perspectives and real examples of effective practice. Thank you to you and the team at FE Associates for creating such a powerful and enriching programme. It has made a significant difference, and I’m genuinely grateful for the experience.”

The Hopwood Hall College Leadership LaunchPad is a testament to the power of partnership, innovation, and forward-thinking leadership development. By investing in its people and collaborating with FE Associates, Hopwood Hall College created a unique, impactful programme that will shape its leadership capacity for years to come. This case study highlights the LaunchPad as a model for other institutions seeking to future-proof their leadership pipeline through bespoke, collaborative, and innovative development solutions.
