Listening, Learning and Leading: What Our Clients Tell Us – and Why It Matters

At FE Associates, our mission is simple: to provide expert insight and specialist support to the FE sector, something we have been doing with pride since 2004.  But how do we know we’re getting it right? The answer lies in listening closely to our clients, understanding their experiences, and acting on their feedback. One of the most effective ways to measure client satisfaction is through the Net Promoter Score (NPS)—a tool that not only quantifies loyalty but also guides our journey of continuous improvement.

What Is a Net Promoter Score?

The Net Promoter Score is a globally recognised metric that asks one straightforward question: “How likely are you to recommend our organisation to a friend or colleague?” Respondents answer on a scale from 0 (not at all likely) to 10 (extremely likely). Scores of 9 or 10 are considered “Promoters” – loyal enthusiasts who will keep buying and refer others, fuelling growth. Scores of 7 or 8 are “Passives,” satisfied but unenthusiastic clients who are vulnerable to competitive offerings. Scores of 0 to 6 are “Detractors,” unhappy clients who can impede growth through negative word of mouth.

The NPS is calculated by subtracting the percentage of Detractors from the percentage of Promoters. The result is a single figure that reflects overall client sentiment and loyalty.

What Our Clients Told Us

Our recent client survey produced a resoundingly positive picture. The overwhelming majority of respondents rated us 9 or 10 out of 10 for likelihood to recommend, placing FE Associates firmly in the “Promoter” category. This is a testament to the quality, responsiveness and sector expertise that our team brings to every engagement.

Clients consistently highlighted our strengths:

• Outstanding sector knowledge and expertise: “Undoubtedly the best,” said one respondent. Others praised our “in-depth knowledge and understanding of the sector – specialists, not generalists.”

• Responsiveness and communication: “Super responsive and well informed,” noted a client, while another emphasised our “excellent engagement and communication.”

• Person-centred, bespoke service: Many valued our “person-centred approach,” “flexibility,” and ability to “home in on the needs of the colleges.”

• High-quality leadership programmes: Programmes such as “Stepping into Leadership” were described as “highly impactful.”

• Strong recruitment outcomes: “Supportive throughout the process,” “excellent service and support with executive recruitment,” and “brilliant job on the recruitment of senior staff” were just a few of the comments.

Where We Can Improve

We know that excellence is not a destination but a journey. Our clients offered thoughtful, constructive feedback on how we can do even better:

• Wider service options: There were requests for more variety in our training programmes and for expanding support into hard-to-recruit areas.

• Consistency and continuity: Clients asked for a dedicated “account manager” to ensure continuity and a deeper understanding of their needs, as well as consistent quality across all of our service offerings.

• Programme variety and content: A handful of clients who have completed a number of our training programmes called for new and updated training content.

• Cost and rates: Some respondents felt our rates could be more competitive and that this could broaden access to our services.

Our Commitment: Listening and Acting

Every piece of feedback is invaluable. It shapes our thinking, informs our strategy, and drives us to raise our standards even higher. We have already begun shaping our response to this feedback. We are implementing a new client success strategy, which strengthens how we work with our clients and provides even more support rooted in value for money. We are investing in technology and innovation, incorporating AI into a core service offering, looking ahead to consult on future training and development needs, and exploring new ways to deepen our partnerships with clients.

Our aim is not only to maintain high NPS scores but to ensure every client feels valued and supported. As one respondent put it, “FE Associates are extremely responsive and supportive. They cover a breadth of areas and have invaluable experience for FE.” Another summed up our approach: “Always seeking ways to pivot, innovate and improve services”.
