FE Associates made a significant impact across the further education (FE) sector in 2025, strengthening leadership, enhancing institutional effectiveness and driving innovation in colleges and training providers across England and Wales.

Amid funding pressures, evolving policies and increasing demands on leaders, the sector required more than transactional support. FE Associates’ work provided strategic partnerships and capacity-building, enabling institutions to navigate complex challenges and deliver improved outcomes for learners and communities.

In 2025, we worked with 50 consultants to support over 70 interim leadership placements, helping colleges maintain stability and build long-term organisational capacity, particularly in senior curriculum and quality leadership roles. This innovative employment model also enabled institutions to save more than £170,000 in IR35-related costs.

Leadership development across the sector was another key area of impact. FE Associates delivered programmes to 371 delegates, spanning first-time, middle and senior leaders. Participants reported transformational experiences, with an average satisfaction score of 4.9 out of 5, equipping FE leaders with the skills, confidence and insights needed to meet evolving challenges.

Our recruitment activity contributed directly to sector improvement, supporting CEOs, Principals, CFOs, and Governors in securing high-calibre appointments. Permanent leadership search assignments increased by 19%, applications by 21% and diversity outcomes improved, with 25% of applicants from non-white backgrounds and balanced gender representation in senior roles.

FE Associates also supported 31 colleges with quality improvement services, enhancing teaching and learning, curriculum design, governance and inspection readiness. Strategic partnerships helped embed sustainable improvements across institutions, reducing bureaucracy and increasing measurable outcomes.

Innovation in 2025 extended the sector’s capabilities. The launch of FEA-I, a sector-specific AI platform, supported 25 colleges in implementing data-driven decision-making, while University Leadership Associates expanded leadership recruitment into higher education. Partnerships with the Chartered Institution for Further Education offered professional recognition for leadership programme graduates, raising standards across the sector.

Beyond institutional impact, FE Associates contributed to the wider FE community by sponsoring awards such as Good for ME Good for FE, supporting student achievements at West London College and publishing Thriving, Surviving or Nose Diving, a study on the wellbeing of sector leaders.

“2025 demonstrated what can be achieved when the sector invests in its people,” said Matt Atkinson, Managing Director. “By strengthening leadership, fostering innovation and promoting diversity, we’ve seen tangible improvements across FE institutions. Our focus remains on supporting the sector, helping leaders thrive, and enabling learners and communities to succeed.”
