About Us - Welcome

November 2021

Dear Colleague

Director of Teaching, Learning and Assessment

I want to thank you for your interest in joining us in this key leadership role at Waltham Forest College. This is an exciting time to join the College for the next stage of its journey, being part of the new leadership team driving the College forward at pace.

I am proud that our College is one of London’s most successful colleges and our vision is to help our students to achieve the best possible future.

In February 2018, Ofsted judged the College to be ‘Good’ in all that we do and we are particularly proud to be described as an ‘inclusive college’. Our community and our students are central to everything we do and we aim to improve life chances for adults who are returning to the workplace or who want to upskill within their current work context, as well as our school leavers. We have a very successful SEND provision and provision for apprentices.

Teaching, learning and assessment, including support for learning, are the focus for our core business. We are working towards ‘Outstanding’ and continuing to attract and develop our staff who are the key to us achieving this. If you are committed to working with an organisation with high aspirations, then I would love to hear from you.

Culture will also underpin our success in providing our community and students with the services they deserve to get them the highest quality employment position possible. This culture is set on high aspirations, innovation, leadership, action, collaboration, teamwork and respect.

If you thrive in this kind of environment, if you are solution-focused and if you join our team, you will further develop your coaching skills so that you can tease out great solutions from your peers and the people you lead and manage.

All of our teams and individual members of staff need to be entrepreneurial in mindset and agile in how we respond to the internal and external needs of students, staff, employers and strategic stakeholders. If you believe you possess the abilities and skills to succeed in this management level role, and you have the energy and pace to make a significant impact on the long-term success of the College, you will fit in well here.

Over the past year, we have made great progress in shaping a new, positive culture where strong communication, accountability and shared ownership drives our route to success. We have made quick and impressive improvements in our quality and financial performance and we have embarked on a range of exciting curriculum-driven initiatives, with many more to come.

As our new Director of Teaching, Learning and Assessment, you will bring a track record of improving the quality of teaching, learning and assessment and you will use your strong leadership skills to earn the trust and respect of colleagues from across the organisation. You will be highly creative and innovative and will work collaboratively with staff to develop excellent practice across the College. Most importantly, you will know what great teaching and learning looks like, will have the experience of driving up the standard of teaching and will possess a tried and tested toolkit to drive best practice. As a College we are highly ambitious and this means not being like every other college, it means being different and better, and teaching and learning is key to this.

We have appointed FE Associates to support us with this crucial appointment. Prior to submitting an application, interested parties are encouraged to arrange an initial conversation with our FE Associates lead consultant, by emailing Matt.Atkinson@fea.co.uk, to discuss the role and schedule a first-stage interview via Teams to take place before the closing date.

If you feel you have the creativity and leadership expertise to deliver excellence, we look forward to hearing from you.

I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to the College.

Janet Gardner
Principal and Chief Executive
