Introduction

COLLABORATIVE      CONFIDENT      COMMUNITY-FOCUSED

At Solihull College & University Centre we have much to be proud of - we are consistently good across all aspects of our provision and our financial health is outstanding, we have a fantastic team of staff and governors, and we take great pride in the achievements of all of our students.

We are a confident college with plenty of ambition for further development, and we are now seeking a new Principal and Chief Executive to lead us into the next phase of our journey. We are looking for a highly successful and proven FE or post-16 education leader whose heart is focused on the experience of our students. Our new Principal and Chief Executive will be values driven and will work collaboratively with staff, governors and stakeholders to ensure we are meeting the needs of the region and the communities we serve.

We have appointed FE Associates to support us with this crucial appointment. Prior to submitting an application, interested parties are advised to arrange an initial conversation with either of our FE Associates lead consultants, by emailing Jo.Johnston@fea.co.uk or Matt.Atkinson@fea.co.uk, to discuss the role and schedule a first-stage interview via Teams to take place before the closing date.

About Us - Welcome

Dear Colleague

Thank you for your interest in the post of Principal & Chief Executive of Solihull College & University Centre. In October our Principal of 7 years, John Callaghan, passed away after a very short illness. Lindsey Stewart (former Deputy Principal) is our Acting Principal and is looking towards retirement. As a result of excellent leadership from John and Lindsey and the Executive Management Team, the College is in a very strong position to handover to a new Principal.

The College’s quality of teaching and learning is excellent and our financial health is outstanding. We have a very good reputation locally, regionally and nationally. Our student enrolment numbers are healthy and growing. Student satisfaction, staff satisfaction and employer feedback are extremely positive. The College was one of the first to achieve an Institute of Technology (IoT) bid in 2019 and the IoT hub is due to open in early 2022. This year, the College won a Centre of Excellence World Skills Award, was recognised for its quality of careers support and was admitted into the Chartered Institute for Further Education. We are hungry for recognition and improving standards. Our last full Ofsted inspection result in 2016 was good and our interim visit in September 2020 was equally positive. The merger with Stratford-upon-Avon College in 2018 was seen as one of the best managed in the country.

We are at an exciting point of change with plenty of ambition for growth, more awards and further success. We want our new Principal to be a proven FE leader who can work well with our established Executive Management Team and Governors. Someone who has a great understanding of business and whose heart is focused on the experience of our students. We need a great communicator who can extend existing good relationships with employers, Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, Greater Birmingham and Solihull LEP and Coventry & Warwickshire LEP, Chambers of Commerce, West Midlands Combined Authority and the West Midlands College Group.

There is much to be proud of at Solihull but a huge opportunity for a new Principal to make their mark. Our Strategic Plan 2021-2024 will be your starting point. You will have the full support of a fantastic team of staff and Governors, and students of which you can be proud.

The College has three sites in central and north Solihull and Stratford-upon-Avon. We have over 9,000 students and a core population of 16-18 year olds, the majority of which come from Birmingham. Apprenticeships and Higher Education provide excellent pathways for our students. Our turnover is 47 million.

You will find further information in this pack including supporting documentation, a schedule of recruitment and how to apply. Our website and news stories will give you a good feel for the College. If you would like to discuss the role informally with me, prior to application, this can be arranged through our consultants at FE Associates.
