Welcome

January 2021

Dear Candidate

Principal Roles at Carlisle, Kidderminster and Newcastle Colleges

Thank you for your interest in the role of Principal at Carlisle, Kidderminster and Newcastle Colleges which are all part of NCG – one of the country’s largest college groups, embracing six general FE colleges and one sixth form college located across the North East, the North West, the Midlands and London.

These role holders will all be members of NCG’s Group Executive and will each hold a strategic portfolio of responsibility for a business area spanning the whole Group. They will work closely with the other College Principals and with the Executive Team responsible for shared services and central functions which apply across NCG – a key example being the Executive Director of Quality and his team. This is not only to provide excellent education and training in their own colleges, but also to ensure sharing of best practice right across the 2500 members of staff who work as part of the Group, fostering our ethos that we are ‘One NCG’.

The key focus of the roles will be to lead each college by driving excellence in quality, in student experience and outcomes, and in developing the business of education, including appropriate and future-ready curriculum, that will serve their local communities. Effective oversight of finances and people, through developing the local strategic direction and growth strategy in line with the Group’s Strategy Towards 2030, will also be key to the new role holders’ success.

NCG prides itself on its ever-improving college performance, with positive student engagement and outcomes being the driving ambition behind all that we do. The challenge for the new Principals will be to build on their college’s strengths and quality enhancement journey by adding breadth and depth to the current curriculum offer, improving on the performance of the college and developing partnerships with employers and other local stakeholders, including those in HE and other FE providers, with a view to collaborating where possible for regional benefit. This will be even more important in a post-Covid, post-Brexit world.

NCG’s new Strategy Towards 2030, launched during 2020, sets out our new mission and vision, our six strategic themes and our values, which underpin all that we do as a Group and as individual colleges.

'We value and empower people by being both inclusive and diverse; by trusting and respecting our communities; by taking ownership whilst working collaboratively; and by inspiring excellence and curiosity.’

The successful candidates will need to be able to demonstrate that their vision, leadership and passion for excellence is underpinned by these values and demonstrates their commitment to NCG’s overarching strategy. They should be able to communicate and share their local vision whilst motivating their colleagues and students to feel loyal to, and be part of, the wider learning organisation that is NCG. They will drive the business of their college by being externally networked in their local area, by having an understanding of their civic role and responsibilities, and by promoting the power of education in all that they do as an ambassador of NCG.

We believe that these new Principal roles are an exciting opportunity for candidates from a range of backgrounds who have the ambition, innovation and determination to succeed within a dynamic and forward-looking organisation.
