Introduction

Building Fairer Futures

At Milton Keynes College, we are ambitious for our learners, the communities we serve and the future of the City of Milton Keynes. Our focus is on where we actively break down barriers to transform lives.

Milton Keynes College Group is unique as the only further education group in the country with a flagship Institute of Technology alongside a thriving college campus and a national prison contract, extending the reach of our physical footprint from Durham to the Isle of Wight. We are deeply committed to meeting the education and skills needs of one of the fastest growing and productive areas within Europe and to do this, we champion inclusion and challenge inequality, and use our influence to encourage others to do the same. After 32 years at Milton Keynes College, the last 11 of which were successfully leading the College, our CEO and Principal has announced her retirement at the end of this academic year and so we seek a new Chief Executive and Group Principal to lead us on the next stage of our ambitious strategic journey. As well as driving positive change and development across all parts of the organisation, our new leader will play an active role in the city, ensuring shared economic, employment and skills objectives are achieved. You will be an innovative, inclusive and inspiring leader who gets people to achieve more than they expected.

We have appointed FE Associates to support us with this crucial appointment. Prior to submitting an application, interested parties are advised to arrange an initial conversation with our recruitment partner, by emailing Jo.Johnston@fea.co.uk, to discuss this role before the closing date.

About Us - Welcome

July 2022

Dear Colleague

Chief Executive and Group Principal

Thank you for your interest in the role of Chief Executive and Group Principal with Milton Keynes College Group. We very much hope the information we provide gives you an insight into this important role and what we are looking for in our new Chief Executive and Group Principal.

We are very proud of Milton Keynes College Group, the only further education group in the country with both a national prison contract and a flagship Institute of Technology alongside two thriving college campuses. We are a values-driven organisation with an inclusive culture, a commitment to quality and delivering for our learners and, in 2017, we were rated Good by Ofsted.

The Group is based in Milton Keynes, the UK’s newest city and home to the fastest predicted population growth in England. Milton Keynes is the South-East Midlands’ gateway to the world with global businesses such as Santander and Red Bull Racing – both of whom are key College partners. Milton Keynes is a green city where you are never more than half a mile from a park; 50% of our population is under 35; and we officially became a city in 2022.

At our two Milton Keynes campuses, in the centre of Milton Keynes at Chaffron Way and at Bletchley, we offer a broad range of qualifications with more than 3,000 16-18-year-old full-time students studying vocational study programmes, apprenticeships and Higher Education. In an area where most secondary schools have a sixth form, the two campuses are a critical part of the landscape for 16-18 year olds, and the wider Milton Keynes community. Our award winning courses include catering and hospitality, with our brasserie once again a finalist for AA College Restaurant of the Year in 2022, and sport, where our young footballers entered a men’s league for the first time and won in 2022.

Milton Keynes College Group is the lead partner for the South Central Institute of Technology, building on the role Bletchley Park played as the home of modern computing and the reputation of Milton Keynes in driving innovation. Consortium members range from micro-businesses and SMEs in Milton Keynes, to regional, national and global businesses including Microsoft, KPMG, McAfee, Evidence Talks, VWFS, Activate Learning and Cranfield University. Here we offer Levels 3, 4 and 5 digital technology courses from cybersecurity to digital marketing, to games and animation as well as Microsoft accredited pathways.

Our work in prison education is longstanding, with more than 27 years’ experience of delivery. Currently, we provide education services in 19 prisons in the South Central region and across the country covering all the High Security Estate. We are proud of our quality-driven approach to prison education and are proactive in working with government on improvement (see https://www.fenews.co.uk/exclusive/time-to-unlock-prison-education/).

After 32 years at Milton Keynes College, the last 11 of which were successfully leading the College, our CEO and Group Principal has announced her retirement at the end of this academic year (August 2022) and so we seek a new Chief Executive and Group Principal to lead us on the next stage of our ambitious strategic journey.

We require a highly committed, energetic and emotionally intelligent professional to lead the College. The successful candidate will be someone who has a proven track record in being able to deliver excellence in teaching and learning and an outstanding student experience. They will be able to combine this with the strategic knowledge, business acumen and ability to build relationships to help us grow.

You should be comfortable working with a wide range and level of stakeholders on the internal and external stage and may already be an experienced Principal and Chief Executive in another college and are looking for a new challenge. Alternatively, you may be an aspirational Deputy or Vice Principal of a successful college who has the proven skills and capacity to lead Milton Keynes College Group. It is not essential for you to come from an academic leadership pathway, but you must be able to demonstrate what excellence in teaching, learning and assessment looks like and have the drive, rigour and tenacity to lead us to even stronger outcomes, growth and financial sustainability. It is essential that our new Chief Executive and Group Principal can work collaboratively and with pace and purpose within our values-driven culture.

We have appointed FE Associates to support us with this crucial appointment. Prior to submitting an application, interested parties are advised to arrange an initial discussion with our recruitment partner, by emailing Jo.Johnston@fea.co.uk, to discuss the role before the closing date.

This really is a truly unique and exciting role that has learning at the core and will provide an accomplished senior leader with the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the achievement of our ambitions. If you feel you have what it takes to succeed in this role, we look forward to receiving your application.

Yours faithfully

Charlynne Pullen                                                              David Meadowcroft
