Introduction

At HCUC, we create choice, opportunities and success, and our top priority is the future of our learners. We are a highly regarded and significant provider of education, training and skills in London and our quality of education and financial health are outstanding.

We are now seeking a new CEO to succeed our excellent Group Principal and CEO, Dr Darrell DeSouza. We are looking for a highly successful and experienced sector leader to take us into the next phase of our journey which will include merger with Richmond upon Thames College to create a larger group with an income of circa £70m.

We have appointed FE Associates to support us with this crucial appointment. Prior to submitting an application, interested parties are advised to arrange an initial conversation with our recruitment partner, by emailing Matt.Atkinson@fea.co.uk, to discuss the role before the closing date.

About Us - Welcome

Dear Colleague,

Chief Executive Officer

Thank you for your interest in becoming our next Chief Executive Officer.

HCUC was formed in 2017 when the merger of Harrow College with Uxbridge College was completed. As a strong and resilient organisation, we play a vital role in meeting the education and skills needs of West London and beyond, and as a flagship college group, we are recognised for our high-quality provision and financial strength. Due to the hard work of leaders, governors and staff from across the college group, we have been successful in pioneering a range of initiatives including the West London Institute of Technology and T Levels. Our reputation as being a high-quality provider with an extensive curriculum offer that attracts a significant learner base, positions us well to succeed over the longer term.

Our 2018-21 strategy saw us navigate the merger successfully and our new strategy covering 2022-25 provides 5 key priorities which form the bedrock of plans and ambitions for the immediate future. These are:

  • High Performance – delivering the highest quality of learner experience and outcomes.
  • Resources – strengthened and sustainable outstanding finances.
  • People – effective recruitment and investment for a highly professional and flexible workforce.
  • Curriculum – delivering for the future whilst building the confidence, mental well-being and resilience of learners.
  • Effective Partnerships – collaborating to deliver a significant contribution to the London and UK economic recovery.

As a board, we have a very positive outlook for the future. We remain committed to delivering on our merger plans with Richmond upon Thames College (RuTC) and believe that bringing the two organisations together will deliver on our ambitions to create a natural geographical arc of campus locations and provision within West London, enabling a connectivity and extension of provision whilst still allowing both organisations to draw from their traditionally wide base of learners within London and the surrounding counties. We continue to work in an inclusive manner with our colleagues at RuTC and are clear that the successful integration of the two organisations will be a key priority for our new Chief Executive Officer.

As a leading college within London, we have very high expectations of ourselves and this means we are looking for a very strong and highly experienced leader to deliver on our ambitions for the future. We are looking for someone who can be bold in their thinking whilst leading us into new fields and new opportunities. We will expect our new CEO to be able to navigate the challenges ahead at the same time as exploiting the range of opportunities emerging from the policy landscape. As well as delivering on the merger with RuTC, we expect our new CEO to drive outstanding quality, diversify and extend our income base, drive beneficial collaboration and position us as an anchor institution for the learners, communities and employers we serve.

We realise that we are presenting a challenging and extensive job description and a person specification that requires a lot from applicants – this is a big job at a crucial time for the further education sector. To help you decide on whether this role is right for you we have distilled our core requirements as follows:

  • Our next CEO will be a highly experienced senior leader with a strong background in the further education sector and system. This experience will most likely have been gained at CEO level or as a highly experienced Deputy in an organisation of similar scale and complexity. We are open to considering individuals with extensive senior level experience from other parts of the education system but in these cases, we expect candidates to have an intimate knowledge of the further education policy and practice landscape.
  • Our preferred candidates for this role will have excellent strategic abilities and will need to be able to demonstrate how they have developed significant strategies to enhance organisation or system performance.
  • Given where we are, with another merger on the horizon, we expect candidates to bring significant experience of leading large-scale change in an inclusive and engaging manner.
  • We will expect candidates to have a very clear and ambitious vision about where our organisation goes next in its journey and have the ability to communicate this across the organisation whilst developing innovative and exciting strategies and plans that take us into the future.
  • We are seeking an excellent communicator who will rapidly build networks and partnerships of purpose with a range of key stakeholders.
  • Highly effective leadership will be crucial to succeed in this role. Therefore, we are looking for someone with excellent people skills who will command the respect of staff and stakeholders and will have a style and approach that takes people with them.

As a Board of Governors we are really pleased with the progress we have made and the position we occupy and we see the appointment of a new CEO as an opportunity to excel even further.

Ensuring that we are always recruiting, retaining and promoting a diverse mix of colleagues who are representative of the diversity in our local communities gives us a great opportunity to deliver excellence in everything we do. Therefore, we actively welcome and encourage applications from colleagues from minority ethnic backgrounds as well as applications from people from groups under-represented in further education senior leadership.

This is an important appointment and to help us to find the right person, we have retained the support of FE Associates. Prior to submitting an application, interested parties are advised to arrange an initial conversation with our lead consultant, by emailing Matt.Atkinson@fea.co.uk, to discuss the role before the closing date.

If you feel this is the right opportunity for you and that you have the right skills and experience, I look forward to receiving an application from you.

With best wishes

Nick Davies
Chair of Corporation
