Introduction

An excellent career-enhancing opportunity is available for a high performing financial leader to join our senior management team as Vice Principal Finance and Resources. Along with our two other recent appointments of Principal and Vice Principal Curriculum and Quality, it’s an exciting time to be part of the brand new team which will shape the College’s future direction and success. The appointed candidate, who will be a senior postholder, will have direct responsibility for finance and support services at Craven College.

Craven College is an aspirational general further education college based in historic Skipton – the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales. With additional learning centres at Leeds Bradford International Airport, and in Ripon and Scarborough, Craven College serves over 6000 learners and has an annual turnover of around £14m. The highly committed team of 430 staff deliver apprenticeships, vocational provision for school leavers aged 16 years+, adult skills, higher (degree level) education, special educational needs provision and a wide portfolio of project work with employers and support for those unemployed.

We are seeking an experienced senior leader who is able to demonstrate their evidence-based success in a similar financial role. You will be a qualified finance professional, able to lead the College on all aspects of strategic financial management and planning. Whilst you do not have to have a background in further education, you will need highly developed communication skills, an understanding of complex funding structures and be committed to the values of the College.

Successful applicants will be expected to have the skills to continually assess the increasingly complex funding environment and its impact so that we, as a College, can take proactive strategic decisions. You will be a key member of the College’s Senior Management Team, providing strategic and operational leadership for the Finance, MIS, Estates, ICT, Catering, Health and Safety, and Business Support teams, ensuring that the College has services that actively support its educational objectives in establishing the highest possible standards of provision for our learners.

About Us - Welcome

January 2020

Dear Applicant

Vice Principal Finance and Resources

Thank you for your interest in the post of Vice Principal Finance and Resources at Craven College.

Here at Craven College, we are looking for an exceptional individual to make their mark in the world of further and higher education and to provide effective strategic leadership for financial planning and resource management. With the appointment of a new Principal and Chief Executive along with a new Vice Principal for Curriculum and Quality, the College is going through a period of change and we want to recruit a senior finance professional who is keen to use this opportunity to work with the new senior team and governing body to ensure the ongoing success and sustainability of the College within our mission of “enriching lives through learning” for learners in the Craven area and beyond.

We believe that Craven College is a great place to study and work; our Ofsted inspection from January 2018 rated our College as Good and our apprenticeship provision Outstanding - but we recognise that there is much more work to do on sustaining good performance and driving College performance to excellent. We want an individual with a track record of success in a similar financial role and the skills to continually assess the increasingly complex operating and funding environment and its impact, so that we, as senior leaders and governors, can make the right strategic decisions.

Craven College has a diverse portfolio of provision serving Craven, the Aire Valley, North Yorkshire and the travel to work area for Leeds and Bradford, as well as East Lancashire. With an annual turnover of around £14m and 430 staff, the College delivers apprenticeships, 16-18 provision, adult skills, higher education, high needs and a wide portfolio of project work with employers and the unemployed.

The College maintains a healthy financial position in what are testing times for many colleges. We continue to make significant and extensive investments in buildings, facilities and equipment to provide a positive learning environment and experience for our students. The College has invested around £12m in new facilities over the last 8 years and summer 2018 saw the completion of a new build Animal Management Centre on the College's Aireville Campus, completing an extensive programme of refurbishment and development. In September 2018, the College was successful in its application for specialist land-based funding and as part of that, work is now underway to establish a new Equine Unit on an adjoining site that will provide top-class equine facilities for our students and community.

We are also excited to be part of the Digital Strand of the North Yorkshire and Humberside Institute of Technology which was recently successful in its application and capital works will be taking place to refurbish designated space within the College in order to equip us for delivery of the relevant programmes.

In this exciting role you will lead on all aspects of strategic financial management and planning as well as providing strong senior leadership across Finance, Management Information, Estates, ICT and Catering, Health and Safety, and Business Support functions delivering motivational leadership to our team of dedicated staff.

Whilst you do not have to have a background in further education, you will need highly developed communication skills, an understanding of complex funding structures, and be committed to the values of the College. You will also be involved in a number of key relationships with a range of stakeholders, funders and regulators and as such, you will need to build and maintain strong relationships through your excellent partnership working skills.
