About Us - Welcome

Dear Colleague,

Director of Public Relations, Marketing and Communications

Thank you for your interest in the role of Director of Public Relations, Marketing and Communications with us here at Barnsley College.

We are extremely proud of our College and what we and our students have achieved in recent years. We are a hugely ambitious organisation with very high expectations, and we are now seeking a new Director of Public Relations, Marketing and Communications to lead on the development of our corporate communications strategy which advances our reputation as an anchor institution within the borough of Barnsley and the wider South Yorkshire sub-region.

Barnsley College is a large tertiary college serving the Barnsley Metropolitan Borough and surrounding areas in South Yorkshire. The College is the main provider of post-16 education in the borough and plays a vital role within the Yorkshire and Humber region. We recently achieved outstanding at our full Ofsted inspection (March 2022) and we deliver outstanding education and training to around 5000 young people, 2,000 adult students and over 1,200 apprentices on an annual basis.

We occupy a very important position in the local community and our presence in the town centre has been strengthened over the past eight years due to the heavy level of investment we have made, including our £48m main building completed in 2011; the new theatre completed in 2012; and the STEM Centre where extensive refurbishments were completed in 2015. Our Honeywell campus, which is 400 metres from the main College building, was completed in 2008 and extended in 2014, and delivers an excellent Sports Academy which has an excellent national reputation.  Also on the Honeywell campus is the ‘Think Low Carbon Centre’ completed in 2012 and a large new Construction Centre which opened in 2016. More recently, we have invested £8m redeveloping our Sci-Tech building to create the Digital Hub in the town and will start to build a new motor vehicle centre over the coming year. Our estate also includes Wigfield Farm, a working farm and visitor centre set in Worsbrough Country Park and our new £17m Barnsley Sixth Form College building, completed in January 2016.

We have excellent relationships with local schools and we currently provide courses to pupils aged 14 to 16. A small, recent addition to the College work has been full-time provision for previously ‘Elective Home Educated’ 14-to-16-year-old students directly funded via the ESFA. The College is also the main sponsor of the Wellspring Academy Trust, established in 2012. The College works closely with a range of strategic partners including Barnsley Hospital Foundation Trust, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and both South and West Yorkshire Combined Authorities. The College also has strong relationships with large, local, private sector employers developing flexible programmes to meet their business needs. We are also increasingly working directly with local employers to ensure that our full-time students are able to progress into employment.

As one of the leading further education colleges in the country, we are at the forefront of a wide range of initiatives focused on ensuring the education and training we provide is making a significant contribution to the nation’s prosperity. We have openly embraced and welcomed government reforms - we were at the forefront of the introduction of the new T Level qualifications, we are opening a new Institute of Technology and we are recognised by the Department of Education as a partner of purpose in the repositioning of further education and skills.

Our new Director of Public Relations, Marketing and Communications will have an excellent platform to build upon. The opportunities to successfully position ourselves with stakeholders, employers, regulators and funders are endless and we are excited about what the future holds.

In this role, we are looking for a highly experienced strategic leader who is able to develop a dynamic public relations strategy which develops and strengthens our Barnsley College main brand and our key sub-brands, including our independent training provider, ITS. Our Director will also deliver a range of high profile internal and external events and will lead on a community engagement strategy that strengthens our reputation as a contributor to the social and economic life of Barnsley. You will be a skilled relationship builder who is able to raise our profile and use our foundation of excellence to successfully position us in the marketplace.

At Barnsley College, we are one team with high expectations of each other and to succeed in this role, you will need to be able to work at pace and to move between the strategic and operational domains seamlessly. If you are looking for a new challenge in a dynamic organisation at the top of its game, this role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your career.
